This dinnerware was used in the South African Parliament until South Africa gained independence from the United Kingdom and became the South African Union in 1931, after which its use was discontinued. Parliament and Union Party member, Dr EL Fischer, purchased the old dinnerware with the purpose of preservation and it has been held in his family ever since.
